Quick Tip

Due to printing on transparent material, the border colours Blue, Light Blue, Navy, Gold & Pink will not display correctly on yellow plates. For example, the colour Blue appears almost Black on a yellow plate.

Moped number plates

Need a new plate for your moped? Or thinking of getting a custom plate?

We’ve broken down the rules and regulations of moped number plates so you have all you need to get a new plate.

You have to follow the basic rules of plates which are:

  • It must be made from a reflective material
  • Display black characters on a white background (front plate if applicable)
  • Display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
  • It can’t have a background pattern
  • Characters on a number plate can be 3D. Klick plates offer a range of plates with 3D characters.

According to UK regulations motorcycles registered from 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the back of the vehicle.  Whilst motorcycles registered before 1 September 2001 can display a number plate at the front, but do not have to.

The main difference between a car plate and one for a moped is the size, this is why there are different rules on dimensions.

  • The characters on a number plate cannot be spread over 3 lines and have to stick to 2.
  • Characters must be 64mm tall and Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 44mm wide
  • The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 10mm
  • The space between characters must be 10mm
  • The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 30mm
  • The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be at least 11mm

Even with all these rules, you can still have an original plate. Using our online number plate maker, browse thousands of different combinations. Whether you want your nickname, surname or something totally random!

For special occasions like moped conventions or just to show off, we you can create show plates that are different to your average government approved ones.
